Darren Rafferty: Living the dream | Explore presented by Wahoo
Director Sam Davis explores the challenges of growing up in professional sport
August 13, 2025
Ever since he was a little boy, growing up in County Tyrone, racing pro was Darren Rafferty’s dream.
Every weekend, his mum and dad would pack him and his brothers and sisters into their camper to drive to club races around the country – time trials, cyclocross events, road races, all run by local volunteers, fueled by thermoses of tea and plates of sandwiches for everyone who showed up. That is where Darren met many of his friends. That is where he met his girlfriend. Irish cycling is a tight knit community that grows strong riders from its grassroots up. Those homey events sparked Darren’s ambition, his dream to make it to the WorldTour.
By the time Darren was a junior, his drive and discipline were winning him races at home in Ireland and on the Continent. His win at the U23 Giro Ciclistico della Valle d'Aosta-Mont Blanc and big results at races like the Giro Next Gen and Liège-Bastogne-Liège U23 earned him a pro contract.
Darren Rafferty made his WorldTour dream come true.
Now with two grand tours behind him and green, white, and orange Irish road race champion’s stripes around his jersey sleeve, Darren is working hard to realize his next dreams in cycling.
Director Sam Davis considers the challenges of making that transition from dreamer to pro back to dreamer again in our latest Explore Film presented by Wahoo, “Darren Rafferty: Living the dream.”
It is an intimate portrait of a young man, who grew up in Irish cycling and is learning how to take on the best in the world.
