Family bike rides turned into something more dedicated when Babette’s older sister joined a local cycling club as a teenager. Wanting to emulate her sibling, Babette began to take cycling more seriously. The pair often trained together, encouraging each other to grow and improve. Still just 20 years old, Babette remains focused on continuing to grow and pushing her limits.

Growing up in the Netherlands, Babette quickly learned to love headwinds and harsh weather. Today, she is happiest racing when the conditions are tough and the parcours includes cobbles, or punchy hills. Naturally, she loves the spring classics.

Babette is currently studying in an online medical science course. She enjoys how studying forces her to take a break from cycling. Another passion of hers is cooking. Babette’s specialty is homemade gnocchi.

Questions & Answers

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go? Why?

Australia or Curacao. These countries are beautiful. But in Australia I would love to travel around and see what it brings along the way!

If you weren't a professional cyclist, what would you be? Why?

Maybe a gymnast or a doctor in the military. I’ve always been doing gymnastics, but had to quit because the combination was not possible. And workwise I am now studying medical science, and I always wanted to go into the military to help the people and countries who need it.

Think about your best teammate ever. What was the quality in them that you appreciated?

Their honesty. I really appreciate the teammates who were very honest to me. Sometimes this can feel a bit harsh but I want to strive for the best for our team and for myself of course. And you only can do this when people around you can help you with the mistakes you make.

What is your favorite word in your native language? What does it mean? What do you like about it?

Gezellig. It means pleasant, but it also means warmth, comfort, and relaxation. The ambience is friendly and cozy.
