Alex Baudin storms into Tour de Romandie lead on stage 2

French rider pulls on a WorldTour leader’s jersey for the first time in his career

An aggressive day of racing saw EF Education-EasyPost’s Alex Baudin finish second on stage 2 of the Tour de Romandie and ride into the overall lead in the Swiss WorldTour race.

Baudin took the initiative and created the winning break single-handedly, attacking with just under 30km to go during a pulsating stage that started and finished in La Grande Béroche.

Four more riders joined our young Frenchman, and the quintet quickly established a sizeable gap over the remnants of the peloton.

Inside the closing kilometers Lorenzo Fortunato (XDS Astana Team) slipped clear from the lead group, but Alex dug deep and won the sprint for second with a powerful kick to the line. The result catapulted the French rider up 22 places in the overall standings.

It’s a momentous day for Alex, who joined the team at the start of the season and who now leads a WorldTour stage race for the first time in his blossoming career. He leads the GC by five seconds, and holds the same slender advantage atop the standings for the white jersey as the best young rider in the race.

Alex wasn’t the only EF Education-EasyPost rider to make a strong impression on stage 2, with Hugh Carthy breaking away earlier in the stage. Hugh’s strong riding across the early climbs netted him a decent haul of king of the mountains points to leave him second in the classification and ensure that Alex could save his legs for later in the stage.

“It was a front-loaded stage with a lot of climbing inside the first 80km. We thought there would be some doubts about who could control the peloton, and we wanted to take advantage of that. When we reached the final climb, there were very few riders left, and whoever got away had a good chance of staying ahead. Alex took the initiative. Winning would have been great, but this is still a really nice result for Alex and the rest of the team here in Romandie,” said sport director Charly Wegelius.
