Bike check: Richard Carapaz’s Cannondale SuperSlice
Richie will race crucial Giro d’Italia TT on Cannondale aero machine
May 20, 2025
Richard Carapaz will race the Giro d’Italia’s critical stage 10 time trial on an aero-optimised Cannondale SuperSlice with a 60-tooth 1x front chainring.
Richie is fourth overall in the race for the maglia rosa and every second will count in the 28.6-km chrono. The top of GC leaderboard is very close after the strade bianche stage, and Richie wants to gain more time on his rivals before the race hits the high mountains, where he loves to fly.
The road from Lucca to Pisa is flat and fast. Richie will race the stage 10 TT on his Cannondale SuperSlice – Cannondale’s all-out aerodynamic time-trial machine. Every detail of the HI-MOD carbon frame has been optimized for aero efficiency, keeping the bike light and nimble, so Richie will be able to blast through the corners at top speed.
His 28-mm Vittoria Corsa Speed tires will grip the asphalt through the apexes and soar down the straights, as he churns over his massive 60t FSA carbon Megatooth front chain ring paired with an 11-30 cassette. Richie has opted for a 1x transmission for better aerodynamics and mechanical efficiency. He rides 165mm FSA cranks with Wahoo SPEEDPLAY AERO pedals, which have been engineered in the wind tunnel to reduce drag, since pedalling turbulence is one of the key factors that can affect a rider’s speed.
Richie will tuck into his aero position in custom Vision carbon TT bars, shaped for him based on data generated over many hours of wind tunnel testing. His Vision Metron 60 SL front wheel and Vision Metron TFW disc have been tested just as rigorously to give Richie every fraction of a kilometer per hour of free velocity.
He will pace the chrono using his brand-new Wahoo ELEMNT BOLT 3, which features a crisper display and smaller shape to reduce weight and drag. Richie will be able to see all of his data at a glance without moving his head out of his position. That could make all the difference in the TT, as he hurtles from Lucca to Pisa at top speed.
Stage 10 will be a key test for Richie’s general classification ambitions. He is going all in for the win at this year’s Giro.
