TdF bike check: Neilson Powless’s Cannondale LAB71 SuperSix EVO

Neilson will rock his new Vision Metron 60 RS aero race wheels at the Tour

July 4, 2025

Neilson Powless’ mission to win a stage at the 2025 Tour de France just got an aero boost.

Our mechanics mounted Vision’s new Metron 60 RS race wheels to his Cannondale LAB71 SuperSix EVO. Vision’s latest carbon Racing Series rims feature a wider 23mm internal diameter for better aerodynamics and reduced rolling resistance. Hand built with aero bladed DP carbon spokes, they use Vision’s new PRS hub with a 72-tooth Helical Clutch ratchet for faster power engagement under load. Neilson will switch between the 60mm Metron 60 RS and 45mm Metron 45 RS, depending on conditions and the terrain of each stage. The Metron 45 RS is 100 grams lighter and better suited to the mountains, while the deeper-section Metron 60 RS is built for racing at top speed on rolling roads, like those Neilson will encounter during the first week of the 2025 Tour de France.

Many of the early stages during this year’s Tour feature profiles similar to Dwars door Vlaanderen, where Neilson sprinted to a historic victory this spring. He’s racing the same bike he won there at this Tour de France.

Cannondale’s LAB71 SuperSix EVO is Cannondale’s ultimate race bike. Constructed from Series 0 carbon, the LAB71 SuperSix EVO is astonishingly light and fast. Cannondale’s engineers have sculpted every millimeter of the frame using wind tunnel data to reduce aerodynamic drag. Neilson rides a SystemBar R-One integrated cockpit, which Cannondale co-developed with motorsports experts MomoDesign, to cut through the wind.

For comfort, Neilson prefers Fizik Solocush bartape, which is soft enough to dampen vibrations from the road, without compromising grip or control. The Tour is 3,339 kilometers long and he wants to be at his best from the Grand Départ in Lille all the way to the Champs-Élysées. That is why he rides a Fizik Vento Argo R1 Adaptive saddle with 3D printed padding optimized for his biomechanics.

For the Tour, Neilson has mounted 54-40 FSA chainrings to his FSA K-Force Team crankset. He uses an 11-34 cassette and Wahoo SPEEDPLAY AERO pedals, which he prefers for their superior cornering clearance, adjustability, and sheer aerodynamic speed.

Speed is, after all, what wins bike races – down the finishing straight and across tough, technical terrain on the way there. Neilson has loaded this year’s Tour route onto his new Wahoo ELEMNT BOLT 3 and knows that the race is going to be especially difficult this year.

He will ride 30-mm Vittoria Corsa Pro tires for the best grip on all road surfaces and uber-low rolling resistance. Mounted on his new Metron 60 RS wheels, this tire and rim combination is extremely fast and efficient. The wider rim ensures that the tire sits firmly on the wheel, which reduces the mico-movements in the rubber that produce road friction and aerodynamic drag.
