Richard Carapaz raced into the top three on GC with an 87-kilometer solo attack to end the sweltering first week of the Spanish grand tour.

Richie and his teammates will miss Rigoberto Urán and Rui Costa, who each had to leave the race early after falls, but Darren Rafferty, James Shaw, Harry Sweeny, Jefferson Alexander Cepeda, and Owain Doull are each ready to ride like ten men to help Richie in his hunt for the red jersey.
