Bike check: Lachlan Morton’s Cannondale LAB71 SuperX for Hills Gravel
Lachy will give his new gravel racer its first competitive test in the Prosecco hills
March 28, 2025
Lachlan Morton has a brand new race bike for Hills Gravel.
Lachy will debut his Cannondale LAB71 SuperX at the Italian off-road event. Cannondale’s latest gravel racer is nimbler than its predecessors, with more aggressive geometry and better aerodynamics. Uber-light and fast across all terrain, it is built to be yeeted into corners and go full send down steep, rocky descents. Lachy can’t wait to launch his new bike up the sixteen hills that define Saturday’s race course.
“The new LAB71 Super X feels great,” Lachy says. “This is a course that has a lot of different terrain. So you kind of need a bike that can do all things. You need to run a bike that goes right down the middle, nothing extreme, but just capable of doing everything well. This course is constantly throwing something at you. You're constantly changing directions. There are a lot of corners. There are some more technical sections. There's some single track stuff, some big bottlenecks, a river crossing pretty early on. The new LAB71 SuperX is a really racy gravel bike. It is sweet.”
Lachlan will ride 44-mm Vittoria Mezcal tires at Hills Gravel. He has mounted them to his Vision Metron 45SLs, which cut right through the mud and the wind. Weighing just 1390 grams, they are tough enough for Italy’s roughest terrain and super stiff, so they accelerate with every pedal stroke.
Lachy will pilot his way through all the lefts, rights, ups, and downs on the Hills Gravel course from his System R-One Carbon one-piece cockpit, which was designed in collaboration with legendary motorsports studio MOMODesign. He rides relatively long 175mm cranks in order to generate extra torque. The LAB71 SuperX’s elevated bottom bracket makes pedal clearance a non-issue.
With 52-36 FSA chainrings up front and an 11-34 cassette on the back, he’s got all the gears he needs to power up and over the Prosecco hills. Lachy will navigate the course with his Wahoo ELMNT Bolt and is rocking a Blinder 1300 front light and Plus Rear Bike Light, both from Knog.
