Kristen Faulkner wins second Olympic gold medal

With team-pursuit victory, American champion and Paris road-race winner adds a second Olympic gold medal to her collection from these Games

August 7, 2024

Days after becoming the first American woman in 40 years to win a gold medal in the Olympic road race, Alaska’s Kristen Faulkner added a second gold to her collection with a win in the team pursuit on the Paris velodrome.

Kristen and her USA teammates finished the four-kilometer race on the banked wooden track in a time of 4:04.306, just short of the world record, averaging 58.942 km/hr to beat New Zealand in the gold medal final in front of a roaring crowd in the French capital’s cycling stadium.

Kristen only took up track cycling this year. If she could earn a computer science degree from Harvard and work for a leading venture capital firm, she could learn how to ride just as fast on the velodrome as she does on the road. She’d already switched sports once. Going from Harvard rower to US cycling champion was a bigger jump than turning herself from a road racer into a track cyclist.

On the boards, she soon excelled. Her power and time trialing prowess transferred well to the track and she managed to make the US Olympic team pursuit squad.

On Sunday in the road race, Kristen rode to a historic gold medal under the Eiffel Tower. She celebrated with her family and then refocused on the track.

She wanted to do her best for her teammates, for herself, and for her country. And this evening, that is exactly what she did.

Congratulations, Kristen. You are an inspiration.
