TdFF Daily | Stage 2 & Stage 3 | Kristen Faulkner and Lotta Henttala shine on double day

EF-Oatly-Cannondale riders put in strong performances during both stages of the double day at the Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift

August 13, 2024

Kristen Faulkner closed out a double Dutch day of racing at the Tour de France Femmes with a fifth-place finish in the Rotterdam time trial, just six seconds short of the stage winner.

Earlier in the day, Lotta Henttala sprinted to fourth in the race’s fast and hectic second stage.

The tens of thousands of fans who lined the courses got to see two stages today, as the day’s racing was split in two. First, the peloton would race 67.9 kilometers across the Dutch countryside from Dordrecht to Rotterdam. Then, in the afternoon, they would take on a 6.7-km time trial through the city streets of Rotterdam.

The morning’s stage was fast and furious as the whole peloton fought to ride at the front, hopping curbs and chopping into roundabouts to get in position, as the course wove through the region’s red-brick suburbs. Alison Jackson did a huge turn for Lotta when the peloton accelerated into the final kilometers. The two EF-Oatly-Cannondale teammates found each other in the pack and then Alison drove ahead, jumping from wheel to wheel to set Lotta up for the sprint. At the line, Lotta finished fourth, just a bike length behind the winner.

Our team then had a couple of hours to recover before the second race of the day: the short time trial back and forth over the Maas river on Rotterdam’s iconic bridges.

Our double Olympic gold medallist Kristen Faulkner pushed all of her power into the pedals but came up just short at the end.

Tomorrow, we hit the hills, as the Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift takes us from Valkenburg, home of the Amstel Gold Race in the south of the Netherlands, into Belgium and the Ardennes before the finish in Liège.

First hear Lotta and Kristen’s thoughts from today.

Kristen Faulkner

It was really fast, the first part, especially, because it was downhill tailwind. The first climb was pretty brutal. Coming out of the roundabout was a lot harder than I expected. And the second climb over the bridge was also harder than I expected. And then it finished so quickly.

It was just like you go turn, turn, turn to the finish. I think I lost it on the final turn. I had one really slow turn. I thought I had to slow down a bit more than I did and then came in with too much speed and had to brake a little bit late. I probably lost two, three seconds on that corner. That's a bummer, but every race you learn. Next year I'll come back.

Lotta Henttala

It was hard. I was there with Allison again. I was scrambling. I just went full gas to the last corner, but had to break, and I think I lost half a match there, and then didn’t have a super kick in the end. We’ll look forward again. Tomorrow, we’ll go full gas again.
